It Might Get Loud is fantastic! It gave me a whole new appreciation of The Edge and how much work he puts into getting the right sound. Another master of the effects unit is John Frusciante. His pedalboard is huge, but you wouldn't guess it from most Chili Peppers songs. He uses weird effects to make the subtlest changes in the sound.
When he started with RHCP, Frusciante had a BOSS DS-2 and an Ibanez Wah. By 2006 his rig is something like 2 metres long (see attached photo)! Another example again would be Ed O'Brien from Radiohead.
It's a difficult line to walk between using effects to enhance the sound and getting swamped in them I think.

Hi,
Someone has offered me a G & L Asat Special (year 1988) with LEO's signature on the headstock. The price is recommended by the Vintage Guitar Guide, $ 900, someone has something to say about it?
Someone owns a G&L?
Thanks
I HAVE 2 GUITARS RIGTH NOW.I HAVE AN IBANEZ ELECTRIC/ACOUSTIC,AND MY BABY A DEAN RAZORBACK.THE RAZORBACK HAS A BILL LAWRENCE L500XL IN THE BRIDGE AND A SEYMOUR DUNCAN 59 IN THE NECK.IM GONNA REPLACE THE TREMELO WITH AN ORIGINAL FLOYD ROSE DOUBLE LOCKING TREM.IM RUNNING THROUGH A RANDALL RG100ES HEAD INTO A DIME CABINET.I HAVE A ROCKTRON SUPER C IN THE EFFECTS LOOP.2 CHORUS PEDALS ONE SLOW ONE FAST.TO GIVE THAT SWIRLING EFFECT.MXR PEDALS AND DUNLOP PEDALS.
IM GONNA GET A PEDAL BOARD,AN FOOTSWITCH MADE BY JM PRODUCTS,USA.ID ALSO LIKE TO GET A WIRELESS.
My sick rig! Just bought (after searching forever) a second Randall Warhead 4x12 so now instead of the 4x12 / 2x15 combination, both cabs are the Warhead 4x12s so I can put them on either side of the stage and get the same tone from both sides. The 2x15 was nice, but I like this better. The Head is a Randall Lynchbox (George Lynch signature) RM100. I pulled the EL34's out and threw in a set of 6L6's, but I htink I'm gonna switch those out for some KT88's. This one has the Blackface (simulates a fender amp), the SL+ (Simulates a Marshall JCM 800), and the treadplate (simulates a Mesa double rec) modules. Planning on getting a bunch more modules to include some custom ones but this works pretty well for now, especially with the Line 6 M-13 and the BBE sonic Maximizer pedal.
When playing out, I use a Roland ME-50 into a Mesa Boogie Lonestar. For guitars, I pretty much always take a Tele and sometimes take my '61 Strat or '61 ES355. When I'm at home practicing, I use an old Yamaha G100-112 or my Peavey Classic 20 for an amp and play whichever guitar strikes my fancy at the moment. I have a Pod and a Roland GR-33, but haven't fooled with them in years.

For those of us with bad GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). What's your current gear set-up and why?
...
Okay, so let's revise. You have a gig tomorrow, what are you taking from your arsenal and why?
Well, now I'm not sure which to answer. But the simplest and most accurate response is: "it depends." I'm in 4 different rock bands, none of which play the same exact genre (and some of which in fact are markedly different), plus a church praise band.
As for guitars, which you indicated indirectly (by including them in you own answer) should be considered part of the rig, I have 19 electrics (and 5 bass guitars). Only a couple of the guitars (1960 Fender Duo-Sonic with issues and a c. 1973 Ovation Breadwinner which is very quirky, though I'm planning to use it in church this week) are almost always off the table, and I make a point of intentionally trying to rotate throught the gigworthy ones. The basses are all gigworthy, it just depends on the band and what I feel like that night.
My most recent gig a couple weeks back was with my side "hippie" band that does semi-acoustic rock without a full kit, just a djembe for percussion. My "rig" that night consisted of my Fender acoustic-electric mandolin direct to PA, my ultra-cheapo Esteban acoustic-electric lined out to PA, and my glorious beater 12-string Yamaha guitar played entirley acoustically, despite that everything else in the band, including the djembe, was either lined/mic'd to PA or (in the case of the bass, played through a kickback combo) otherwise amplified.
No amp! Snicker if you will, but it not only sounded fine, it was a hell of a lot easier to pack out at the end of the night. Frankly I can't remeber the last time I'd played with no amp at all; in fact I'm relatively certain I never have in 30+ years of performing. Just goes to show your rig should be whatever is appropriate. This was a small restaurant gig in a space that doesn't usually have live music (very cramped), done as a benefit.
Here's a rare shot of me playing not only an acoustic, but totally unmic'd/unamped, on my beater Yammy 12 (with Strat player into a mic'd small Fender combo and mic'd djembe (barely visible to the left), from that gig (more about my 'loud rigs" in subsequent posts):
In the opposite direction, my "main band" does the punk rock and for that band, it's plug and play into a Sovtek "Tube Midget" MiG50H 50W head, driving a late '70's/early '80's Risson 4x12. No pedals, with the drive dimed, and volume to taste. It may be my fave amp for really loud rock and roll.

I think for your style of punk rock that Sovtek is about the best amp you could have, the only other amp I might consider would be an older Vox for that really british sounding dirty crunch.

Wow, thanks! I'm not really a purist, I think there are probably lots and lots of ways to get to roughly the same place. I do prefer a master-volume tube amp in the 40W-60W range (so you can push the amp a bit more without going deaf!), but a 100W Marshall master volume JCM800 is probably the poster boy for that sort of sound. Alternately, a Marshall 45W Bluesbreaker, or Fender Bandmaster, with a pedal in front, while a bit different sound, would get the job done too-- Steve Jones of the Pistols seems to have played Fender amps (specifically, Twins) a lot. A buddy of mine plays a similar loud dirty rock sound and uses a Bandmaster pushed by a pedal into a 4x12, and it sounds grand. In fact, before I got the Sovtek and the 4x12, I used to gig with a '66 Fender 60W 4x10 Super Reverb (to the right in the pic below) with a dirt pedal pushing it, and it held its own with my rhythm player's 100W Marshall JCM2000 4x12 halfstack:
my current rig.
amps: ashdown fallen angel fa 40, or I use a carpet covered carvinx100b half stack with a vox tone lab running in the effects loop for bigger shows.
guitars: prs custom 24, fender 1960s player strat or a tanaka strat.
effects in order: dunlop crybaby-ibanez ts7 tubescreamer-boss sd1-artec soloest distortion-arion chorus.
I mostly play acoustic live by here is my current electric gear:
Guitar:
* G&L legacy strat
Amp:
*Mesa Boogie Dual rectifier Roadking head(snake skin) and a 2x12 Mesa cab
*KMD 1x12 combo (my first amp)
*Eagletone 615 t
Pedals:
Boss TU-3 tuner
Boss DS-1 (cheeseblock mod)
Boss OS (overdrive)
Joyo American Sound
Rogue Analog Delay
I would like to add a hollowbody and mod my eagletone. It is a sweet little amp for the money! I want to get matched EL84s from eurotubes and put a jensen 12" in place of the no name 10"
Here is the latest incarnation of my pedalboard. I've ditched my Line6 MM4 for the moment whilst I get one of the switches replaced and there's no room for my Dunlop Rotovibe, but it covers everything I need for my bands current set.
My PRS Johnny Hiland has also gone and been replaced by a Tyler Studio Elite HD in purple shmear!
