Fast Strumming?

Can you give me any tips on how to strum really fast on one string, like in 'East Jesus Nowhere' by Green day or 'Knights Of Cydonia' by Muse? Yes, I am using an alternate picking technique

    Practice with a metronome!...try a slightly faster speed than you can handle...then go back to a more manageable speed and try again....and rinse and repeat...and repeat ....and repeat.... Using a metronome will also ensure good timing...which is a must....
